Gregory Boyington was a great fighter pilot who fought in World War II against Japan in the US volunteer group, the Flying Tigers, where he was a flight leader.

He later enlisted in the US Marine Corps, where he was nicknamed "Pappy" because of his age (he was 30). In two years, Boyington shot down 26 enemy aircraft, but was shot down in early 1944 and spent the rest of the war in captivity.
