Ben-Gal commanded the Israeli 7th Armored Brigade which held off Syria's advance on the Golan Heights during the Yom Kippur War. He had foreseen the war two weeks in advance and began preparing his brigade despite being mocked.

As a result, the 7th Armored Brigade was the only unit in a fully-ready state at the start of the war. Their heroism and Ben-Gal's leadership were instrumental in ensuring Israel's victory over Syria.
